BALCLUTHA ATHENAEUM.
The usual monthly meeting of ..the Athenaeum Committee was held on Monday evening. There were present : Messrs T. T. Ritchie (President), A. Grigor (Secretary), H6gg, # Turnbull, Cramond, Nelson, and Fleming. :
The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
The Secretary read the receipts and pay-, ments since ; .last meeting, . and the same .were approved of. ,tt
The Secretary also read letters from Mr J. W. Thomson, M.H.R., witli reference to the Act passed during last session of Assembly, incorporating the institution and vesting the endowment' of 'six hundred acres in the corporation. ' / In reply to qiie'stioris, the Secretary ex-' plained that after the Bill had been introduced, it was found necessary to -insert the names of five gentlemen, to constitute the corporation, and the names of Messrs R. Cramond, J. S. Fleming, A. Grigor, Thos." Paterson, and J. W. Thomson, therefore appeared in the Act as the corporation. There had yet been no meeting' of that body, but there would be in a few days, when the Crown grant for the site of the Athenaeum building would be applied for, and the institution placed upon a proper footing as a corporation. The following accounts were, passed for payment :— J. Macdonald,- & Co. , oil, etc. , L 9 4s ; Mrs Stevenson, cleaning, L 5 ; Daily. Times, L 2 ; Mr Braithwaite, Ll 6s • Interest, LlB. .- . • -
A letter was read from the Rev. F. Knowles, resigning his position as VicePresident on account of llis shortly leaving the district.
The same was accepted, and it was. considered unnecessary to fill the vacancy till the ensuing annual meeting. The meeting then adjourned.
