OTARIA.

[from our own correspondent.]

\ meeting of householders was held on the 20th instant, in the schoolhouse on Block TX, Waiknka, for the purpose f>f funning a School ■ Committee for the year 1878. Mr Irving was called to the chair. The following gentlemen were elf-eted members of Committee : — David Oordon, William Nelson, Samuel Rogeroon. .James Scott, Robert CoupGi'thwaite, jun., James Purvis, and James Robertson. The financial statement of the late Committee was read, which showed a very satisfactory account. After the above business was concluded, a discussion took place about the Road Board, but nothing definite was arrived at for the present. It was unanimously resolved that a deputation, consisting of Messrs David Andrew, James Scott, and Thomas Bain, present a petition to the Southland County Council, praying that the main road through from Otaria to Ta3 7 lor's creek railway station be made at once, so as to enable the settlers to cart their grain to tbe railway before winter sets in. At the meeting of the new School Committee, held in the schoolhouse on Friday night, Mr Robert Coupertbwaite was elected Chan-man, and Mr James Purvis secretary. There were five applications for the office of teacher ; the secretary was instructed to write to them. The late heavy rains that we have had has done a deal of good to the crops here, which £ expect to see fit for the reaper in about three weeks hence. The crops are all looking splendid. A few months ago the settlers little expected to see a threshing mill in tbe district this season ; I however, l\Tv James Anderson has agreeably dis* appointed them by importing one of Clayton and Shuttle worth's eight-herse -power steam thresherIt made its first attempt on a stack of oafs and hay belonging to Mr Thomas Trumble, and performed its work in a vei-y satisfactory manner.
