MAIL SERVICE TO OATLTNS.
TO THE ETirTOU. Sntj-^ln your last week's issue a letter signed 'by "Mr Alfred JTowitt, in explanation of his not signing a petition got up by the people of Port Molyneux to get an alteration in their mail service. The residents of this district ought to be thankful to Mr Jowitt for giving publicity to the matter so that they may take the necessary steps to prevent the people of Fort Molyneux from' quietly sitting upon them, by getting a boon conferred upon themselves at considerable disadvantage to the Alrariri and Catlins River disdistriefcs. The opinion of the people here is, that the action of the Port Molyneux people in this instance is very narrow-minded, and will in all probability be the cause of an entire change in the mail service between BjOclutha, Port Molymeux, and Catlins River. To bring about the
change referred to, a meeting is to be held in the Friendly Societies' Hall, Owako Flat, on "Wednesday evening next week, to take steps to have a petition signed and forwarded to the Post-mnster-Gcr.eral, praying for the following alterations': — " That our mails leaving Dunedin by the morning train be taken direct to Catlins River instead of beina taken to Port Molyneux, tho mail-man to return next day with the outgoing mail, leaving this place at 9 a.m., giving ample time to be at "Balclutha for the mail to be forwarded to Dunedin by the last train." To the people of Port Molyneux the above change would he no inconvenience, seeing they would have ample time to answer any correspondence they received the day previous, and would therefore place the various districts on an equality. Tho alteration would not cost any more than at present, as the mail from Port Molyneux would join, at tho junction of the roads npar Mr Hay's place, "Regarding the importance of the two districts, in population as well as a business point of view, I wijl leave the matter without comment, but T think any unbiased person knowing the particulars of the case, would say this place is justly ontifcled to the change asked for. — I am, &c, Robert Andrew.
