CEMETERY COMMITTEE.

The Mayor and Councillors then resolved themselves into a Cemetery Committee. Mr Hope said there were several matters he wished to bring before tho notice of the Committee before ho retired from it. One matter was, that when a dray j was taken into the cemetery with a tomb- ! stone or for any other purpose, he observed that it was taken over the ground, sometimes across graves, destroying ornamental borders, corners, &c. This should at once be put a stop to. Again, the " destitute ground" was in a very unsatisfactory condition, as it was impossible to tell where the graves should be dug. The ground should be properly laid off, and the fences trimmed. The season for tree planting had now come round. He sug-

get-*.ted thafc application be made to the Curator of the Botanical Gardens for 100 assorted Cai if ornian pines for planting at the Comotery. He also pointed out that scvernl parties wore in the habit of leaving the graves of their deceased relatives in a ruinous condition — in a state disgraceful to any civilised community. The trustees had the power to keep the graves in proper order, and to charge tho owners of the graves. Ho suggested that this should be done. After a conversation, it was resolved that Mr Sutherland be employed to attend to the various suggestions made ; the clerk to apply for the trees. Mr Hope also moved that the clerk write to the Chairman of the Balmoral Road Board, asking that the road line at the cemetery be opened up, so as to admit of vehicles attending funerals being turned. This was agreed to. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hope for the great interest ho had all along taken in cemetery matters, and the trouble he had taken in connection therewith. Mr Hope, in reply, said that although he now retired from tho Committee, he should still continue to take an interest in tho matter, and to afford tho Committee every assistance iv his power. The meeting then adjourned.
