BALCLUTHA TOWN COUNCIL.

*-> | _ The ordinary meeting of the Town Conn- ! cil was held on Tuesday evening. There were present : His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Hogg, Tosh, Hope, and Doull. Minutes. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from tho Town Clerk of Christchurh, intimating that tho meeting of Mayors and delegatus would be held "in Wellington on Ist August. A letter was read from Barr's trustees, mentioning that the expense of re-survey necessary by tho handing over to the Corporation of ground for widening certain streets had been greater than was antici- i pated, and suggesting that, seeing the Cor- j poration had got a valuable piece ol ground, j tho Council should pay the expense of j survey. ! Consideration of the matter was deferred. TENDERS. The Mayor reported that tenders had been received for works in Charlotte, Gordon, and Douglas-streets, and suggested that as that was the la3t meeting of the present Council, and as tho works were important it would bo only courteous j to the new Council thafc the the tenders should not be opened till next meeting - . Councillor Hogg concurred, and said that ar, Barr-st-reet was the second work passed to be done, the tenders for it should be opened at the same time. These, however, had not been sent in, as the engineer had not prepared th j specifications iiTtime. He thought the whole question as to these works should be left over. Councillor Tosh pointed out that too much, delay had already taken place with these works, and unless they were gone on with at once they would have to stand oyer for a year, as the river would soonrise and the spring work would shortly commence, when men and horses would all be otherwise employed. Councillor Hogg said he understood a meeting of the new Council would be held on Friday night, so that no great delay need arise. The consideration of tenders to stand over. THE METAL CONTRACTS. The Mayor pointed out that a contract for metal for Bast Ward had been lot six weeks ago to be completed in a month and that the contractor had not yet commenced work. Councillor Tosh moved that the contract be cancelled and deposit returned. Seconded by Councillor Doull, and carried. Councillor Tosh pointed out that a corresponding delay had occurred with the same contractor for the metal for the main road at the south end of the township, and that tho road had suffered much through the delay. THE MAIN ROAD. Councillor Hope called attention to tho necessity for repairs upon the main road through East Ward. i THE LOWER RESERVE. ! Councillor Hogg pointed out that tho ! scrub on the Lower Reserve was being I very much destroyed by the railway workmen. He suggested that the Clerk call the attention of the Police to the matter. — Agreed to. VALEDICTORY. The Mayor said that as that Was the last meeting of Council during his term of j office, he would take the opportunity of expressing the great pleasure and honour he had experienced in presiding. When he assumed office he had entei-tained some fears that all might not go smoothly, but he was proud to say that during the wholo term of office there had not been ono -angry or unbecoming expression used at 'the Council board. Ho heartily thanked the Councillors for the courtesy they had invariably extended towards him. The meeting then adjourned.
