Retirement Of Director Of Livestock Division
The retirement is announced fo Mr W. C. Barry, M.R.C.V.S., from the position of Director of the Livestock Division, for IG years of which he has been director. In his early ■ administration of the t Livestock Division Mr Barry took aii active part in providing an adequate staff for the work of -meat inspection. The revision of the Slaughtering anci Inspection Act and its replacement by the. Meat Act, 1939, and the Regula tions under this Act, stand as a monument to Mr Barry. The lifting of the embargo on the introduction of stock direet from Greal Britain, a measure which came into effeet in recent years, has been recom mended by Mr Barry for inanv years. suitable safeguards and precautioiiis being advocated at the same time. Mr Barry \vas responsible for an amendment to the Stock Act 'being passed in 1945 which made compulsoiy the tuberculin testing of herds suppJying milk for town supply and which provided for further extension of tub erculin testing 6f eattle generalJv. Opposition raised on-the question of compensation by town-miik supply producers has meant that the measure has not yet becoine fully bperative, but it is expectcd tha't adjustment of this diifi culty will shortly be made. Besides his work as a divisional director, Mr Barry was appointed chairman and registrar. of the Stock-remedie? Registration Board in 193(5; in the same year he was appointed chairman of the ^eterdhlirv Surgeons Board. In 1943 he was appointed chairman of the V'eterinary Servjices Coinmittee, the fmdings of which rqsulted in the Veterinary Services Act of 194(5. Under the Act the Veterinary Services Council was established, on which Mr Barry has been a Govemment nominee sinc'e its inception.
