Big Battle With Guerrillas In Philippines

Received Wednesday, 9.30 a.m. ' MANILA, Nov. 22. A big battle is raging between Communist-le'd Hukbalahaps and constabulary forces in Batangas Province, about 60 miles souJh of Manila. Constabulary headquarters announced tonight that about 300 dissidents, using trench mortars and machine-guns, engaged two constabulary companies. There is no report yet on the casualities. Brigadier - General Alberto Ramos, chief of the constabulary, leaves for the battle scene early tomorrow. The Hukbalahaps (People's Alliance Aimy against Japan) were organised as leftwing guerrillas against the Japan - ese during their occupation of the Phiiippines. They have been pitted against landlords and rural constabulary in Central Luzon since the end of the war. President Quirino has tried to persuade the Hukbalahaps to surrendel- their arms.
