N.Z. Women Tennis Players In N.S.W.
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 20. Evelyn Atwood played cleverly to defeat Mrs. Sadie Neweombe 8 — 6, 6 — 3 in the second round of the New South Wales tennis championships at Rushcutter Bay. Mrs. Neweombe, who toured New Zealand with the Australian team, was seeded sixth in the women 's singles. Realising that Mrs. Neweombe preferred to play shots while running, Miss Atwood contrived to eramp her game and kept the ball as mueh as possible in the centre of the court. This forced Mrs. Neweombe to wait for the approach and as she eontinued to make eerious errors from her forehand, Miss Atwood pounded tliis side. She also tired Mrs. Neweombe badiy as she drove her aeross th^ court when th6rd were favourable positions. After the mateh Miss Atwood was congrfttulated by friends but exclaimed that "Mrs. Neweombe was not nbarly aS good as in New Zealand," Betty Potter though beaten by the New South Wales representative player Esma Asford, had chanees. She playbd copybook tennis to take a 5—3 lead in the first set but failed to exploit the wind aiid Miss Ashford, by keeping the ball in play, wore her down. Mavis Kerr, who is playing with a tenis elbow for whieh she is having ray treatment each day, was eompletely oft' form in her mateh against the evergreen Mrs. Harry Hopman and the Victorian had an easy win, Tn the jtlnior sijigles, Judy Burke Wassufprisingly beaten by Faith Parker, a hard court player from Sy'dney. Miss Becroft played .impressively, winning her mateh against Shirley Stoneman who is eonsidered . to be a future iiiterstate .player.
