Queen Carnival To Start Early in 1950

Anniversary Day, 1950, has been decided upori as the offlciai date for the launching of a queen carhival to raise fttnds for the Levin division of the St. John Ambuiance Brigade and. the Leviti-Wai-tarere Surf and Life-saving Club. This was decided at a spscial meeting held recently at which a' number of other local organisations were represented. . The Mayor, Mr. *H. B. Burdekin,. presided. At the invitation of the chairman, Mr.- A. J. H. Allen outlined the position insofar as the St. John Ambulance Brigade was conCerned and the proposals of the division to raise funds for the provision of a hall and equipment. Ihe division had proposed as first priaa a trip to? Austraiia, and a fcrip around New Zealand as a second prize. He also- outlined the steps which had led to the making of a joint effort. He added that the division desired to raise a sum of £4000 from the Cflort, and "the surf club's requirements were £2000, making a total Of £6000. The president of the surf club, Mr. W. J. Barrat, outlined the pcsitlon from the point' of view of his club, stressing the value of ihe services of a surf llfe-saving club. - Mr. H. Palmer outlined the steps that .it was proposed to take to orgainise the appeal ihsofar as the outlying areas of Foxton, Otaki, Shannon and Paraparaumu were concerned. On behalf of the Levin Ratepayers' Association, Mr. W. Seddon expressed his enthusiasm for the effort and wished it every success. He also pledged the support of his association, whose memters were behind him ih this ma^ter. A general discussion then ensued on the whole" proposal, during the course of which the suggestion was strongly put forward that a paid organiser , should be engaged to run the qampaign. Some discussion also centred on the suggestion that the carnival should conrmence on Deeember 17, 1949, and run till January 31, 1950, it being cortsidered that several of those who would be actively engaged in the campaign would be over busy with their own affairs during the Christmas and holiday season. It was finally resolved that the carnival officially commence on Anniversary Day and close on the Tuesday after Easter, 1950, but, where any organisation desired to seize the opportunity of the holiday season for raising funds, ic be psrmitted to do so, provided the funds raised were handed to the central committee for ultimate distribution in equal proportions to the various queen co'mmittees. Extension. Of Interest. Tfc was also decided that the. representatives of the two bodie's should make an approach to the Mayors of the three adjacent towns, Otaki, Shannon and Foxton, and like associations at Paraparaumu and other points within the area, with the idea of convening meetings of residents to gain their support. The question of engaging a paid organiser was referred to the executive committee for consideration, and it was also suggested that the proposition for the engagement of an organiser be put to the outside districts for their opinion when the respective meetings were held. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. Present were : The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin; the chairman of the joint committee, Mr. A. J. H. Allen; the acting secretary, Mr. H. L.
