Prospects Appear Bright This Season
v (By
It was indeed unf orfcunate that the weather was so boisterous and cold when the Levin Swimming and Life-saving Club held its official opening on the night of Novetaber 10. Nevertheless, if the attendance imder suoh conditions Was any, ifidication of ,the enthusiasm felt by local swimmers, then the prospects for a successful season ahead are particularly bright. . A pleasing note in the first night's events was the good form shown by the swimmers who did well last season, Their consistent swimming again this season will bring home more laurels to the Levin club. Gratlfying. Featiire. Another gratifying feature of the evenihg was the increased numiber of young women who entered' in the races. During the past few seasons the number of women swimmers has fallen away appreciatively, and it was only towards the end of tihe season, when the Foxton Cup appeared on the horizon, that much enthusiasm was evident among them. This season the Centre's Fisher Cup and the Levin Cup should ereate more eagerness among senior and intermediate women, and provide interest for local foliowers. Newcomers to this district all showed excellent swimming ability in the evencs, especially the junior, Cameron, who put up some good times, Learners' Classes. Numerous -enquiries have been received from people desiring to know when a class for learners will commence. The club, however, feels that it would not be wise tcr begin " with these lesons until ^the weather becomes more settled and warmer. Once the lessons begin they must be continued, if possible, without a break. It is hoped that final arrangements will be made soon fox* che classes to begin in the near future. Levin is passing through another stage of rapid -growth at the present time, and with it the growth of local amateur sports bodies. Several of these bodies are now anticipating erecting buildings to service their growing needs. Tlie swimming club cannot be left out. Extension Of Baths. For some years past this club has been making strong endeavours to have the Coronation Pool extended in size. The club has also " built up a small reserve for the purpose of assisting7 the Borough Council in this respect and to furnish the pool with suitable lighting. It seems that at last the end is in sight and that the project may be put into operafion in the near future. It is proibabie that the club will have to appeal to the public for; support for, this project, However,] it'is realised that such an appeal would be best made at a time When those , being made by other ; bodies have been finalised. j
