Theft Of Overcoat Brings Gaol Sentence
In view of the list of previous convictions against accused, he could see no use in further extsnding the benefit of probation to him, said Mr. J. Hessell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday when sentencing Rongomate Paul Lewis, -a Maori labourer, to a term of one month's imprisonment. Accused, who was stated by Sergeant W. Grainger to be at present on probation, was charged with the theft of an overcoat, the property of Roy Hamilton Mungavin, at the Ohau dance hall, cn October 1. It was stated by Sergeant Grainger that actused had been seen wearing the ooat, the buttons of which had been altered. Its loss had been advertised, but no reply had been received. When apprehended accused had admitted the offence, stating that someone had taken his and he had removed the other to compensate for the loss. • - An order for the return of - the coat was made by the magistrate.
