Final Plan Approved For Italian Colonies
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 12. The political committee of United Nations today finally approved a plan for the future of the former Italian colonies in Africa. The plan provides: — Firstly, Libya shall become an independent sovereign state not later than January 1, 1952. Meanwhile the peoples of Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan shall be assisted towards independence by sr United Nations commission and an advisory council. Secondly, Italian Somaliland shall be administered by Italy with the help of an advisory council and under the terms of a United Nations trusteeship agreement. In^epetfdence shall be granted at the end of ten years. Thirdly, a United Nations Commission shall examine conditions in Eritrea to ascertain the wishes of the inhabitants, and report back to United Nations by next June. Provision was inserted in the plan which would give Italy the right to start administering Somaliland even before the trusteeship agreement is finally approved by the General Assembly next year.
