Church Activities Affected By Cost of Living

TIMARU, Nov. 9. Church work has been affected by the rising cost of living in a similar manner io anv normal Ijusiness enterprise, and the Presbyterian Ohurcli of New Zealani will call on its congregations to 3Ubscribe £11,000 more this year than last to meet the inereasing costs of maintaining the existing work in partic.ular. For missionary pnrposes congregations will be asked to contribute £71,- 1 585. In his xeport to tlie General Assembly of the church at Timaru yesterday, the general treasuTer (Mr. L. B. Mushet) said that tho year past had been one of rocord givi-ng by. congregations. They contributed £h0,900 to the missionary enterprise of the church, only £78 short of the bud-' geted objeetive. The total receipts from all'sources amounted to £77,123 which" was £1308 more than the estimated tOr tal requirements. "Because of the year 's over-expenditure which was exceeded .bv the estitnate by £2865 there had been a deiicit on the .year's work-. ing," said Mr Mushet. "This is not due to any slump in congregation returns but to expenditure which was unavoidable. ' ' Presbyterian congregations, he continued, had actually increased their contributions in the last 12 inonths by £6092, he said, while the total receipts for the year had execed-1948-49 -by £4861» ^ 4 _
