Flooding Of Hokio Road Worries Settlers

Drawing the Horowhenua County Council's attention to the state of Hokio Beach Road and the serious flooding in the locality, a deputation from the Hokio Beach Residents' Committee waited on the council at yesterday's monthly meeting. The deputation, consisting of Messrs H. Channings and E. Brevfin, referred to stagnaht water and the necessity of building up and straightening portions of the road to avoid future flooding. The council decided to refer the questions lo the works committee with the recommendation that it make an inspection and report. Also regarding flooding in the area, the Manawatu Catchment Board wrote to the council stating that it, had received a letter from the settlers' committee - in regard to the clearing out of parts of the Hokio Stream in an attempt to minimise the flooding rislc. The board stated that investigation had reyealed that insurmountable legal difficulties would immediately result from any. attempt to interfere with the streani. The chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, observed that in view of the number of eels in the slream this was probably correct. That really was the position, he added.
