The Levin Racing Club must pay a total of £5862 2s 9d in taxatlon in respect of its spring meet- | ing last Saturday. Still i occupied, it bears above an attic j v/indow the only coat-of-arms of i the Ohurch of England on any ! building in New Zealand. ! New Equipment. | A new angle-dozer ordered 'some j time ago has recently been deI livered 10- the Horowhenua «County 1 Council. A new lathe has also j been installed in the council's ' workshop. Commenting at 'the . council's monthly meeting yesteri day, the engineer, Mr. W. H. : Fraser, said that both these items ; were proving valuable additions to the council's equipment. j Two Whitebait — Grilled. ' Whitebait was a new item on ! the menu to an American who ! stayed at a well-known hotel on | the West Coast. He sought in- | formation from the waitress, who i told hini that whitebait were i small fish, and, in answer to furj ther questioning, very palatable, j too. When he sat down at one of the small tables the food was piled perilously liigh in • front of him— three bowls of soup, nine slices of toast, 12 shortbread biscuits, six sandwiches, four pieces of fruit cake, fruit salad and ice cream, and a cup of coffee. The toast and sandwiohes represented very nearly a loaf of bread. Stories Differed. The Horowhenua Village Settlement section of the main highway will n'ot have its cycle traek for some time yet according to advice received at yeslerday's meeting of the Horowhenua County Council from the district engineer of the Works Department. The construction of the track, which was to run along the main highway from Beach Road to Kimberley Road, was not on the department's estimates for this year, said the engineer's letter. The Main Highways Board, however, was giving the matter consideration and further advice would be given the council as to when the work was likely to commence. Commenting, the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, said it was a different story to what had been told at the council's la'st meeting, when a member had advised that he had been given the assurance of the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, that the work would be in hand before Christmas.
