Fishermen Complain About Rubbish In Rivers
"I am afraid that the river bed is out of our territory," said Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, when commenting on a letter received from the Horowhenua Acclimatisation Society at yesterday's monthly meetihg of the council. The society was complaining that rubbish was being dumped in the Ohau River bed at Kimberley and sought the council's cooperation m puttmg a stop to it. Mr. Colquhoun thought that the complaint was one for either the Crown Lands Department or State Forest Service. and should be referre'd to those departments. He added that he had every gympathy with the society, as the council also had experience of I people dumping rubbish on roads J in its area. "It is unfortunate 'I that people see fit to dump rubj bish in the rivers and on roads," ! he said. "They should have more t civic pride and should 'dump it on their own sections instead of' making eyesores for everyone else." "It seems to be recognised throughout the whole county that i it is the thing to dump rubbish | in the rivers," commented Cr. W. ! Taylor. After further discussion, it was , decided to refer the society 's let-' | ter to 'the Manawatu Catchment Board which, it was thought, might be interested. Mr. Colquhoun stated that the council ' would be only too please'd to coI operate with that body in bringI ing about the apprehension of oflenders. 11 -"i1 ■
