Red Indian Boy's Goodwill Visit To N.Z.

AUCKLAND, Nov. 8. Twelve-year-old David Lawrence Smith, a direet descendant of the long line of Mohawk chiefs in Canada, stepped ashore in Auckland today wearing the pieturesque dress of an Indian chief. He is an ambassador of goodwill frcfm the chiefs of the six nations of Indians to the "King of the Maori race," and carries a message and gifts. He travelled alone but a friend, Mrs W. I\ Gardiner, looked. after him on thc voyage. David 's grandfather won the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre in the First World War. Before leaving Canada David appeared in an educational film made at Ottawa for showing in schools. "My father is a school teacher," he said, '.'but he is also a farmer. I want to see the farms — and the horses." Horseriding* is his hobby. He was met by his unele, Dr Daniel Smith, of Putaruru, who is taking the boy home with him. David will spend about six months in the Dominion. His tribal name is Cah-Donh-Gayh, which means "Flying Feather."
