What National Brake Check Has Revealed

WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. Returns so fa-r received by the Transport Department in its national brake check show that about 4.5 per cent of the motor vehicles examined have poor brakes. In last year's campaign 10 per cent had poor brakes. At the end of the first two weeks of the check the brakes of 4008 inotor vehicles had been tested. Of these 2528 had good brakes, 1291 fair brakes, and 189 poor non-conform-ing brakes. The inspectors conducting the check issued 78 traliic offence notices. Oi' 1203 private cars tested in the second week of the check 698 had good, 42b fair and 77 poor brakes. The check of 385 light trucks showed 225 with good, 143 with fair and 17 with poor brakes. Among the heavy trucks tested 164 had good, 85 fair and nine poor brakes. Seventy-three otther vehicles also had brakes tested and of these only one had poor brakes. The inspectors report that many people have taken notice of the preliminary publicity about the brake check and had their brakes ad.iusted.
