Surf Club Has Its First Trial In Water
Tlie Levin-Waitarere Surf and Life-Saving Club had its first trial in the surf on Sunday, the result being most satisfactory. Under Ihe direction of instructors B' E. Iremonger and D. Batten, the equipment and personnel had a thorough workout. The new women's team was also in action. Practice has been under way regularly since the formation of the club, but Sunday's trial was actually the first in the surf. The club's official opening date has not yet been decided, but it will follow immediately after the openings tof the Foxton and Himitangi clubs. A grand carnival has been planned to which other surf clubs will be invited. Representatives of the New Zealand Surf and Life Saving Association will be in attendance. There are still vacancies in the women's team and any interested are asked to get into touch with the club officials. Arrangements have been made for an Australian surf life-saving team to visit the Dominion during the Empire Gemes in February, but the Levin-Waitarere Club was , no.t formed soon enough to apply ; to be included in its itinerary. It i will, however, be close enough to Levin for local members to see them in action. The Australian team will comprise ten men and a manager. It will include one or two surf swimmers, a board rider, and a six-man rescue and resuscitation team. The first contest against a New Zealand team will be staged on an Auckland beach yet to be decided, on February 12, after which the team will visit Foxton Beach at the invitation of the Foxton Surf and Life-Saving Club and hold demonstrations there. The date of the visit has yet to be fixed.
