The Appeal Of Truth
"No matter how it appears to the contrary, the only thing that finally appeals to the deeps of xhe human heai't is the truth," said Rev. A. Salmond, preaching in St. An'drew's Presbyterian Church, Levin, yesterday. "At various times most of us are ready to believe a lie, and some of us get into the habit of handing on-'rumours that we -suspect to be untrue • without putting ourselves to the troubie of checking up on the facts. We are all apt to believe what we want to' believe, but in our better moments we know that the truth alone can make us free and lead us away from confusion and death. In spite of our laziness, our vested interests in error and our fears that the truth would disturb our way of living, we want the .truth to become clearer and to prevail. Even when we fear the truth we want to know it. "Our Lord Jesus live'd every moment of his days on earth believing that every man and woman in the "deeps of their souls deserved the truth, and had the power in some way and in some degree to recognise and respond to it. He offered Himself to men as the One who could lead them into all truth. His claim found embo'diment in the words 'I am the Truth.' "
