Received Sunday Midnight. LONDON, Oct. 30. On spectacle lenses eventually paid for . by the taxpayers under the National Health Scheme foreign agents and "mushroom" importing firms are making profits as high as £1000 per crate of 5000 lenses, reports the newspaper The People. The Ministry oi"' Health and the British Optical Association admitted *that the cost to .the Ministry of Health, for „lenses' ranged from 5s 9d to 27s 9d each with no profit restrietion. A1 tjqjieal consignment of 12,500 lenses from Italy was valued at £2000. The duty paid was £1000 and the profit at the sale price of 10s per pair of lenses was £3250. The Sunday Express says a woman who obtained four pairs of speetacles under the National Health Scheme is to be asked to refund the cost of two pairs. The woman pretended she lost ;he order forxn legaily granting kes two jairs. _ _ ^
