Levin Croquet Club Opens Its Season
4 good attendance of membetg and visitors charaeterisgd the function held on Wedngsdgy by the Levin Croquet Club to open its new season. The president, 'Mrs. A. O..Powell, weleomed all present. In the course of her remarks she paid special tribute to Messrs H. Wen^ ham, H. Nicholson, H. Boulton, Mudgway, W. Dalzell, W. Bull, H. Tilyard a.pd W. Meering • (the club;s greenkeeper) for ' their help during the winter months ar|d in preparing the lawns and surroundings for the openjng. In the unavoidable absence of the clu'b's patron, Mr. H, B, Burdgkin, Mrs. Powell called on Mrs. W. Lett, a foundation and life members, to open the greens. Mrs. Lett, in a very interesting t£fik, traced the history of the club back over 40 years to the time when it started in a small way on a portion df the bowling green. It was pleasing to note, Mrs. Lett said, that the first secretary of the club, Mrs. M. Herrick, was - also present at the opening. The Mayoress, Mrs. H. . B. Burdekin,- and Mrs. Lett played the first balls through the hoops and. were each presented with a posy, Mrs. Powell receiving a spray, all the work of Mrs. J. Holdaway. Afternoon tea was thgn served by club • members, to which the bowlers were invited. At the conciusion, the president of the Levin Bowling .Club, Mr. A. Meads; thanked the ladies and called for three cheers for them. Competitions played during the afternoon resulted as follows: — Ladder, Mrs. H. Walker; golf croquet, Mrs. Osborne; tin hitting, Mrs. W. Meering.
