Borough Council's Monthly Meeting
The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers on Wednesday night, the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, presiding. There were also present Crs. K. Ames, E. Cook, H. Hakaraia, G. McKiniey and J. Retter, and the town clerk, Mr. Alex. Wilson. Leave of absence was granted Cr. N. D. Anderson. ' A works committee recommendation that tenders be called for the erection of a new men's convenience at the rest resort in Main Street was adopted, with fence repairs to be carried out also. Traffic Inspector C. L. Davis reported that 14 traffic offence notices had been issued during the month of September, mainly for cases of speeding through the borough. Following the issue of several warnings and the serving of two notices, parking in Main Street had shown a general improvement, although there were still a few offenders. "The Chinese gardener at the corner of Wae.renga Road and Main Road presented some difficulty when trying to convince him that he must not let his hedge obstruct the view of traffic. However, I think we will have some co-operation from him in due course," concluded the inspector's report. The health inspector, Mr. W. J. Guinan, reported making 11 visits to habitations during the JulySeptember quarter, when five requisitions were served. New inslallations had heen inspected and a survey of sanitary cenveniences at schools made, while two routine complaints had been investigated. The Rangiuru motor camp had also been inspected, and 'detailed matters attended to. The Horo whenua Electric Power Board acknowledged an application from the council for additional street lights and advised that the matter would be given attention in due course. An applicatioh for an extra- . ordinary water supply on behalf of Mr. H. T. Mould, Otaki Railway, was granted. The Wellington Children's Health Camp Association wrote for confirmation ' that the fences around the portion of land formerly use'd by the council as a motor camp would be restored to their previous condition. Applications for a further two sections in the Tasman Beach motor camp subdivision were received. The Horowhenua Rugby Union forwarded its,. cheque for £26 18s lOd, being the council's share of gate takings at the Otaki Domain during the football season. The cheque is to be acknowledged and the union congratulated on its successful season. The deputy registrar of the Land Valuation Court intimated that two objections filed to valuations woul'd be heard on a date to be advised. Advice that a building recently vacated at Otaki Railway was unflt for further occupation and should be demolished was forwarded by the Medical Officer of Health. The Otaki Railway-Te Horo branch of the New Zealand Labour Party sought permission to hold a shop day at Otaki Railway on October 21.' The applicafjon was granted,
An application to erect signboards in the Tasman Beach Motor Camp and at Rangiuru was received from Mr. N. B. Hazelwood. It was decided that the application be held over until the camp is further developed, when the matter will be dealt with. Objections to the urban farm land list were forwarded on behadf of six ratepayers. The Otaki Returned Services' Association intimated that the executive of the association would like the council to subrnit the plans of the proposed war memorial scheme to the association prior to forwarding them to the Department of Internal ,Affairs. The council acceded to this request, and the War Memorial Executive, it was repojrted, will see that this matter is attended to. An application for the use of the Otaki Domain for the holding of the Manawatu Centre marching championships on December 3 was forwarded on behalf oi the centre by Mr. R. Bills, Otaki. The application said it was appreciated that the Otaki Cricket Club had the use of the ground, -and the marching course, if the application was favourably received/ would be marked to avoid touching the wicket. The application was granted subject to arrangements being satisfactorily made with the cricket club.
