Stray Dogs Play Havoc In Flock Of Sheep

AUCKLAND, Oc-t. 11. Forty-s'x sheep are dead and luanv others * in jured following attaeks by 4 stray dogs on a mob of 92 stud and floek hoggets on the property of Mr. J. M. II. Toft, Island Bloek, Te Kauwhata. l\Ir. Toft valued the dead animals at £13S and says that some of tliem by an imported ram, cannot be replaeed. The havoc among the sheep was caused in about three hours. Apari from those killed or so badly mauled that they later died. nearly 40 others .were injured and ouly six or seven in the whole mob eseaped unhurt. The dogs had disappeared by the time Mr. Toft had discovered his loss. Nearly 70 of the sheep ha! to be earried a mile and a halt to a slied where a veterinary surgeon and soine of Mr. Toi't's neighbours were working on the badly torn animals in an effort to save as many as possible. They worked throughout the night and until 1.30 the following morning. Mr. Toft believes that two or three dogs possibly turned loose by owners who did not want tliem, were responsible for the attack.
