A breakdown in the distribution of , food and not a shorlage of it, was responsible for hunger in many parts of the world, the Deputy-Director ot' United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisatiun, Sir Herbert Broadley, said today when addressing a food distribution conference ut Boston. lle referred to a report in 194(> whevein F.A.O. estimated that the world would j iieed over (to, 01)0, ODO tons of cereal, ' :i0, ooo.Ooo tons of uieat and 35,00( 1,000 extra gallons of milk in 19(50, "but what is the use of even (Learning ot these iigures when Ihe wheat acreage j in the United States will have to be cut 15 per cent. by 1950. Similar measures are already being planned for other foods. ' ' Sir Herbert said the trouble wa?, distribution had broken down. Markets could not be fouud for even the amount of food which farmers in the major export surplus areas, were now able to produce. President Truman's progiamme of technical assistance for economic deveiopment followcd bv a large continuing ca]>ital in\ estuienl, was irndoubtedlv the remedy outstandiug beyond all others for solving the eurrent problem. The remedy for the distribution problem would be the establishment of the international commodity clearing house already proposed bv F.A.O. to ensuc- that suryilus foods could be sold to other countries either : in blocked or eonvertible eurrency.
