Watersiders Object To NonUnion Labour

WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. Waterside workers employed on the Apanui and Karetu at Picton, stopped work this morning because they objected to the employment of an extra non-union gang which included six men in permanent employment in the town. The union claimed that the six men, who were released from their regular work, should not be engaged. The men were engaged because the coinpanv wished to get the Karetu away to Svdney tonight. She has been in port since last Wednesday. Her cargo for Svdney - in'eludes whale oil. I The dispute was referred to the port committee, the ehairman of whieh np* j held the contention of the employers that thev were entitled to engage non- ' union labour wherever thev could get it, when all union men had been engaged. However, work was not resumed. A further call for labour will t>e ( made tomorrow morning.
