Don't Want Inquiry To Cost Too Much
AUCKLAND, Oct. 6. Concern at the prospect that the inquiry by the T-iOeal Government Commission into the administration of Auckland, which is to open on November 7, might run on without any lintitation of time and costs, was expressed bv the Deputv Mavor of Auckland, Mr. J*. L. Coakley, tonight at a meeting of local body representatives. His opiniOn was that the Christchurch and North Shore sittings and the boundary inquiry at Papatoetoe had occupied far more time than members of local authorities and staffs could readily alford. I The meeting was called at the re-. | quest of the Pulrarban Local Bodies' Association to discuss a proposal that the commission should be asked to prepare an order of reference for the. Auckland inquiry to guide local bodies - and othei'K intending to appear. Hav- j ing seen the newsphper references to the fact that the meeting vvas^ to be ! held, the commission had advised Mr Coakley and the association that it was • not its praetice to draw up an order of ( reference in the sense that the terra was usuallv understood. It was not prepared to limit the inquiry in anyway. The meeting decided that it should be a recomniendation to the Tjocal Government commission that it ask all ; local bodies and ad hoc authorities in- , tending to make claims before the - commission, to formulate them in writ* , ing and serve them on the commission'' - , and local authorities concerned before . the end of October. It was also de- ' cided to ask for an .order of reference.,.
