Hotel Purchase Refused On Aggregation Ground

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. When an application for the purchase of the New Zealander Hotel by New Zealand Breweries, Ltd„ from Alfred Barrett for £32,000 came before the Christchurch Urban Land Valuation Committee this morning it was refused on the grounds of aggregation. The chairman of the committee, Mr. V. G. Spiller, said that the committee was bound by the decision in the ease of the Bruce Hotel, Akaroa, in 1947, when Mr. Justice Archer had disallowed an appeal by New Zealand Breweries against the dismissal of the Christchurch committee of their application for the purchase of the Bruce Hotel on the grounds of aggregation. When today.'s ease was introduced, the Crown representative, Mr. D. G. Ward, said he had decided not to raise the question of aggregation. - ; ; • I In ' giving the committee's decision, Mr. Spiller said that if New Zeaiand Breweries felt that because of changed circumstances the appeal judgment was no longer sound, then the proper course of New Zealand Breweries would be to appeal against the committee's decision. Mr. D. E. Wanklyn, for New Zealand Breweries, said that an appeal would be made.
