Artificial Stock Breeding On Wholesale Scale
HAMILTON, Oct. 4. For the first, time in the history , of the Dominion, artificial insemination of cattle was plaeed on a c'ommercial .basis today when operations commenced with the artificial breeding of a group of- eows in the Waikato. The teehnique of artificial breeding for New Zealand eonditions has been perfeeted 'atGthe Ruakura Aniinal Reseatrch "StafiOn and the stationV part in the present operations will be the supply of material for the work. A similar grOUp has been formed in Taranaki .and material from- -Ruakura will be taken there by air. ■ ' • The fact that artificial breeding is actuall'y being carried out on a - commercial basis, "is a great tribute to the persevering and painstaking research work that has been carried out at Ruakura. The administrative work in eonneetion with the Waikato operations, is being carried out by the Auckland Herd Improvement AssociatiQn. The group which- has been formed in the Waikato includes 12 herds in the Rototuna-Horsham Downs area, pedigree Jerseys and three herds at Ngaruawahia. Although tlie areas are not contiguous, the Ngaruawahia, group was included because it could be covered by one of the t'eehnicians who have been tralned for the work-
