Many Will Mourn Passing Of Sam
AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. Sam Sum-Sue-Sum, the last of three. prisoner-of-war companions who were repatriated together from Japan to New Zealand, was bui'ied in the Mercantiie Marine sect-ion of the Waikumete Cemetery today. His two former. companions were a Seots lad and a Welsh boy. Sam was one of the few who eseaped when the tanlcer Patella, from Singftl>ore, was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean. He was taken to Japan as a prisoner to join British soldiere and civilians there. He soon began in a self-effacing way to do things for them. His Oriental mind en'abled him to gLve warning when aiiything nasty was approaching, and to lell them how best to avoid it. , He was evacuated to New Zealand in 1945 and later .entered Greenlane Hospital as a tuberculosis patient. Sam was everybody's friend and made the first eup o-f tea in the mornings. He cherished a photograph of his wife and child in Singapore. Sam reeognised only one nationality, maintaining to tlie last that he was 1 1 a British Mercantile Marine."
