Elaborate Plans For School Gala Day
— ♦ Recent years have seen a remarkable development in education and in teaching technique to give to young people in the schools the education to which they are entitled. These changes have demanded up-to-date buildings, more extensive grounds and greatlv increased quality and variety ocf equipment and teaching apparatus. For many reasons it has not been possible for the Education Department to keep pace with modern changes, or for it to provide evertyhing that , is essential. It has been necessary, therefore, for each school through local effort to supplement what has been done by hte authorities and to do its utmost to meet modern dema/rids. To assist in this direction the department now pays a subsidy of £ for £ on all money raised locally for approved school purposes, inclu'ding the purphase of the latest equipment. That it is necessary to do something of a very definite nature has been recognised by the Otaki School Committee and in order to equip the ischool with modern facilities a gala day committee, representative of the School Committee, Home and School Association and the school staff was recently formed to organise and run an appeal to the people of Otaki and district. As a result of weeks of work gala day is to take place on Saturday next. * The wnole community, through its many organisations, is cooperating to make October 8 a red letter day in the Otaki School's history. Commencing at 2 p.m., a childrens' fancy dress procession, headed by the Otaki Band, will leave the post office for the school grounds, where gala day will be officially opened. At 3 p.m. rriarchmg displays will be given by girls' teams and throughout the afternoon there will be entertainment for all. One feature, and by no means the least, will be the baby show. There will be stalls for produce, sweets, cakes, ice cream, cordials, white elephant, jumble, competitions, plain and fancy goo'ds and afternoon tea. In the evening most of the afternoon features will be continued, but the major attraction will be an outdoor concert for which artists from various parts of Ihe district are voluntarily giving their services. Gala, day promises to supply a grand time for old and young. Every penny raised goes to proi vide school essentials — a modern sound projector, library books, playground improvements, pictures, physical instruction apparatus, teaching aids and so on. Donations for all stalls will be welcomed. Arrangements have been ma'de to collect contributions promised and if the school is advised by telephone a messenger will be sent to any address. The school is confident of success and looks for the presence of everyone next Saturday.
