Personal. Mr. W. R. Adams, a former headmaster of the Otaki State SChool and now at Waterloo School, Lower Hutt, will retfie from the .profession at the end of • the present month. Mr. Adams, who began his eareer in Canterbury, will have spent 40 years in the teaching profession. He intends to live in Lower Hutt. Toheroa Season Closed. To those who indulge in the pasuime of "fishing" for toheroas, a reminder is given that during October and- November the taking of toheroas is prohibitedJunior Road Race. The Otaki to Wellington road race for junior cyclists is set 'down for Saturday next. The limit men will depart from the Otaki Post Office at 1.30 p.m. Photo Finishes. On view in «, "The Chronicle" window are several photos of local interest depicting the finishes of events which were decided on the * secon'd day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's meeting. Bowling Club's Opening. The Otaki Bowling Club will stage its official opening on Saturday at 2 p.m. Th« following day an open tournament will be held and visiting rinks from Petone and Lyall Bay, among other places, have signified their intention of being present. Successful Shop Day. The Otaki branch of the Labour Party held a very successful shop day on Friday last. Considerable interest was shown and the many willing helpers who offlciated did brisk business. Competition winners were Juanita Bills/B. Crowley, Mrs. E. Cook and A. Raika. Dance Successes. Two dances arrange'd by local organisations and held towards the weekend were both very successful. The Young Farmers' Club's annual ball on Friday night at Manakau, while not particularly.well attended, was most enjoyable aird all arrangements did > credit to the promoters. The "Capstan" dance at Ohau saw a large crowd in attendance on Saturday night, and again the function was a credit to the promoters. Beach Card Evenings. The Anglican Beach Hall concluded its card evenings on Monday night, when the attendance •taxed the available seating ac- 1 commodation to capacity. Mr. E.( P. Simcox, on behalf of the promoters, thanked all for their generops support during the season and pai'd tribute to the sterling efforts of those who had. gone to so much 'trouble to ensure the success of the many evenings held. Winners were: Miss J. Booth, Mrs. E. J. Rosoman and* Mr. H. Cole (firsts) and Mrs. E. T. Hafper, Mrs. E. Smith and Miss E. Brown (seconds) .
