Received Sundav, 7 p.m. OTTAWA, Oct. 1. Canada was trying to maintain her niarkets in Britain but there ivas no certaiuty she could do so, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. .T. Gardiner, said I today. He said he would like to seel eondilioiis established under which Bri- 1 tain would make specifie requests for Canadian commodities. If Britain requested 200,000,000 lbs of bacom in 1951, t'anada could fill the order if it planned at least a year ahead. Canada would not be able to supply even the. 160,000,000 lbs Britain contraeted for. this year mostly beeause it was placed late.* He had lioped Britain would maintain a flexible attitude on the 1949 Anglo-Canadian goods contracts but Britain had declined. For example, althougli Canada would be short in the bacon contract she was able to supply extra amounts of cheese but Britain had made no move to accept anything beyond tne 50,000,000 lbs of cheese she agreed to take.
