Shades Of Defoe At Young Nationalists' Dance
Attired in only a pair of shorts, covered for effect with a towel, a conlestant certainly earned. the first prize for men in the fancy dress competition at the Junior National Par..y's shipwreck dance last night. He was Mr. Ian Do'yle, and when he voiced the time -worn maritime phrase "shiver my timbers" he was not . fooling. "• 1 With the temperature far from tropical, no others attempted such extremes, but 70 per cenx of those in attendance wore costumes. The prize for women went to Mss Alice .Robinson. The judges were Mr. and Mrs. C. Wallace and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Tomlinson. -Mary's Hall was"suifcably decorated for the occasion, life buoys and a "rum" keg predominating. Shades of Robinson Crusoe were evident in a large chalk footprint at the entrance to the hall, but the artist's imagination went ever further than Defoe's and the continuation of the footprints across the hall and up the wail o the ceiling caused some speculation. An enjoyable evening of dancing followed, the M.G. being Mr. A. Abraham. This dance marked the young Nationalists second departure from their normal dances, the last event being a "back to childhood dance. '
