Move To Increase Gas Price Not Welcome
The Levin Borough Council's decision to seek a further iaerease in the retaii price of gas was not very weicome news to the Levin Ratepayers' Association. At a recent meeting a member sugg'ested that the borough would do better to improve the present service, ooth m regard to quality and volume, before having a Campaign to popularise the use of gas. it was also decided to give support 'to the Horowhenua Electric Power Board in ics drive to avoid wastage of electricity. Some memoers considered that the principal offenders in the eXcessive use Of gas and electricity were those who did not directiy pay for it. DiscUSsing the provisioh of dfainage and sewerage for the borough, members commented that much had beeh heard two years ago of the furtherahce Of the project, but very little since. They asked if the matter had been fbrgotten or if not-what were the reasons for the delay. Theypointed out that the town wds growing rapidly, but that its administrators "Were not keeping pace with it. . > Among other matters dealt with were the condition . of footpaths in the borough and the council's estimates. Members present from Weraroa expressed concern at the condition of some of the streets in that area. Another member drew attention to the state of the pavement on the southern side of DUrham Street, Satisfaction was voiced with the attention given by the couheil to a bad section of the Winchester Street footpath. A brief study of the estimates left the meeting with the impression that a great deal of new work could not be" expected during the cdming flnancial year. The meeting expressed regret that many residents Would not be receiving urgently-need'ed facilities and amenities.
