Makerua Settlers Fear Flood Dangers

A deputation of farmers from the Makerua area consisting of Messrs R. M. Phillips, H. M. Seymour, A. E. Olsen, L. Vile and G. Smith waited on the Manawatu Catchment Board yesterday. Mr. Phillips explained the river problems of the area and claimed that Wall's spillway was not functioning as well as it used to. It should be lowered at least to the level that it was at prior to 1941. Mr. Vile said the position was intolerable. Had there been I rain in the Manawatu during the last floods, the banks would have been saturated and not stood up to nearly as much pressure as they did. There was only one solution to flood problems in the Makerua area and that was to lower Wall's spillway. Mr. G. Smith said the action of the engineer in lowering Bryant's spillway saved the Makerua. Mr. McKay, chairman, said the board was awaiting a report of fouc>engineers on the banking and spillways in .the Lower Manawatu.
