Young Anglicans' To Jubilee
Last night saw* the close of the official jubilee celebrations of st. Mary's Churc'h, when a jubilee ball conducted by * the Young Anglican Club was held. The church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Frederic Wallis, Bishop' of Wellington, in 1899, and during the past seven ^ days the occasion has been truiy honoured by a series of func'uions, highlights on the social side being a jubilee banquet last Thursday and the young .Anglicans' ball last night. . The members of the club spared no effort to make their event a notable one in the church's history and in this they were certainly successful judging froin the comments of parishioners and outside visitors. Guests of the evening were Rev. G. B. StoteBrandy, vicar of St. Mary's, and Mrs. Stote-Blandy. The Regent Hall was simply but effectively .decorated for the occasion with the delicata greenery of the* weeping willow tree, gay flowers (many donated by exhibitors at the flower show) and branohes of native shrubs in attractive clusters around the walls and behind the stage. Special subdued lighting was also used to effect and what must have been one of the largest clusters of gaily coloured balloons seen in the Regent formed an impressive centre piece hanging from a gaily decorated hoop in the centre of the ceiling. Among the' large number of dancers many attractive frocks were noticed, a number of which followed the latest "new look" trends. M.C. for the occasion was Mr. Keith Lines, who proved most capable and kept the function
going at a merry pace. Music was suppiied by a well-known profes-* sional orchestra. During supper intervals extras were. provided on the piano by Miss Doris Cleal and Graham Nicho1, with special numbers by a young artist, Mr. W. Larkin, Jun. An excellent buffet supper was provided, some of the dishes being home made. Dancing was continued until 1.30 a.m. At the close of the function Mr. Stote-Blandy thanked the Young Angiican Club for organising such an excellent function and all those wiiling heipers who had assis:ed. The evening closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Congratulations are due to the young AngJLcans for the excellence of last night's function, particularly the ball commitlee and • all those who rallied round and sacriflced much of their own enjoyment to lend a hand in the kitchen and supper room.
