Magistrate's Comment On Liquor At Ball

WANGANUI, Sept. 12. Four men were' fined in the Magistrate's Court today for having had liquor in the vi'cinity of a dance hall . on the occasion of a recent ball. "This is brought about by the existing state of law," commented Mr S. S. Preston S.M., when imposing penalties. This Court views more seriously those cases where drinking goes on outside halls with females present. The Court does not view it so seriously where parties are older — it is where young people are concerned that the Court takes these offences more seriously. This is a typical ease .where a ball is held by a responsible business section of the community and as the law now stands, they are really treated like children and not allowed to hold a function in the proper way with liquor under proper control, and treated in a decent and proper manner.
