Mayor Rebukes Last-Minute Applicants

Last minute applicants seeking to have their bus.ness dealt with at borough % council meetings were rebuked by the Mayor, Mr. H. B." Burdekin, at last night's council, meeting. He said that the councii was now meeting fortnightly and there were still too many matters brought along, after ihe agenda ha'd been prepayed and just before the meeting began. He made this comment when the building inspector, Mr. H. T. Tilyard, asked foi> the counci 's consideration of ari application in regard to the proposed erecxion of a butcher's shop in Queen Street. Asking that the mautsr be dealt with, Cr. A. J. H. Allen said the request did noi actually have a great deal to do with the council. The building was to be in concrete and in that regard complre'd _with the by-laws. All that was necessary was for the council/io approve of a proposal to'" put in verandah posts. "These peop e are anxious to get these' buildings up

and get a living. out of them, ana we don't want to hold them up by shoving them off for another fortnight," he said. It was decided to receive the. application, which asked for permission to use posts for the verandah instead of, as stipulated in the bylaws, the suspended iype. It was stated that the other shops on both sides had posts and a suspended verandah would not meet the case. After discussion Cr. A. W. Parton moved that the by-law.be re.'axed to meet the . case., I't wasv seconded by Cr. Allen 'and carried unanimously. The Mayor said he hope'd thatin future applicants would endeavour to be early with their requests. ' o An indication of the pressure of business before . the council meetings can be gauged from the fact that although monthly meetings have been changed to fortnightly meetings the average' duration of recent meetings is from 7.30 to 11.30 p.m.
