Fine For Drunkenness. A Levin farmer was fined' £1 on a charge of being found drunk in Levin last night. He pleaded guilty. It was stated that he liad been arres.ed by Constab'e E. T. I King at 10.30 p.m. in ChamberI lain Street. Mr. D. J. Gardiner, J.P., was 011 the bench. Sun Camera. Detailed stu'dy of the moon and the sun has' been made possib e by the construction of a special camera at the Dominion Phvsical Laboratories. The apparatus will be used in conjunction with Ihe photo-visual telescope at the Carter Observatory. "The Double." The old man in the tram smiled when his friend asked after his health. "Never felt hetcer," he said. "I've struck the double — won £10 in a iottery and got a State house!" His app'ication for the house had been in ten years, he told his friend. The Iottery prize would help pay for the fioor covering-. Deerstalker Shot. Mr. George Fredericlt Woodham, single, a service driver of the New Zeaiand Railway Road services, was accidentally killed while 01F a dee'rstalking expedition in the Hokitika Valley, on Saturday. While sitting with his rifle it discharged without warning, the bulr let entering his chest and causing his 'death some three hours later. Cement Position Improves. The cement situation had improved somewhat during the last fortnight, enabling • the foundabions of some new dwellings to be poured, said the building inspector, Mr. H. T. Ti'yard, at the fortnightly meeting of the Levin Borough Council last night. Twelve new dwellings had been started during the month of August, and eight completed, leaving 76 in the course of erection. Six permits of a total value of £11,849 had been issued during the month for new dwellings. Rocked To Foundations. The Levin Borough Council recently called for 'tenders for the construction of concrete foundations to carry the new gas holder at the gasworks. . Last nlight, at ihe fortnightly meeting of the council, the tenders were opened. They ranged from £325 10s to £1100. "I think the firm must have mis-rea'd the specifications,'commented the Mayor, Mr. H. B. BurdekHn, after the council had recovered from ihe shock which the latter figure gave. Heavy Clean-up. Cleaning up the Levin Park Domain after last Thurs'day's rugby game took two borough workmen five houi's at an approximate wa'ges cost to the council of 30s. The borough coimcil's overseer, Mr. E. Lycette, raised the point of payment for this work at last night's council meeting, saying that he believed there was a minute in the eouncil's records which said that those who did the catering at such functions were held responsible for the cleaning up afterwards. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, replied that in this case the caterers were there ,under an 'arrangement with the Horowhenua Rugby Union and he thought that in view of the fact that the council was deriving a sum which would "approximate £30 on a 10 per cent. gate taking basis, it could afford to meet the cost. This was agree'd to by the council. \
