Bernal, phyicist, for mombersliip m the association 's council. This action has been taken because of stateiuents he is said to liave made at the peace congress in AIoscow last Friday. Professor Bernal, who was one of the wientific brains beliind D-Day, is sai.l to have hailed Stalin as "the proteetor of science" and to have stated that it was "not mass bombing that beai (termanv but the heroic Red Army." He is also reported to have said that jii capitalist countries the direction of science is in the hands of those whosu only aim is to destroy so that their own profits can be secured for somo year.i longor. The association. which is holding its annual meeting at Newcastle-on-Tyne. agreed that Professor Bernal 's statements "could not be reconciled witl the scientilic aims and ol),jects of the associations."
