The Reward Of Enterprise
Last February there was featured on this page an article headed "The Birth Of A Bowling Green" in which the initial stages of laying down the Levin R.S.A.'s green were detailed.
This week's title is even. more i apt, as anyone who had visited the ! green during the last two days wiii verify. Those Diggers and Kiwis who gave up valuab.e Saturdays to swing pick and shovel in the general effort throughout the winter have reason to feel proud of the result. Those who could not make it might feel a twinge of conseience. Those who did much of the initial work, however, are not looking for all the glory c.xid would be only too pleasea to aecept reinforeements for the last grand lap. Salurday will be devoted to the turfing of the "bank" up to a height of 12 inches. Turf is being suppiied by Messrs Aa Fletcher and R. Keenan, so all that is necessary is spades and manpower. The laying down of a narrow ledge of cement is another job for Saturday. Already one side has heen done. The green itself was cut this week and is looking in first class order. • The grass seed sown some months ago struck very well. Working on the green this week were the green committee, Messrs E. F. Lacey, E. G. Hewitt and F. Nash, assisted by Mr. H. Powell. They disagree with the suggestion made at the annual meeting of the club that play may -not be possible until the 1950 season, but
feel that with a little effort the ciub will be ready for opening as soon as any of the others .this season. With this in view they 1 have been right on the job, as- 1 sisted materially by Mr. E. J. ( Stanley and boys fro.m the Levin ; Training Centre. A temporary pavilion is to be 1 constructed at ihe farm by the ; boys of the centre and re-erected 1 on a site at the green in time for the opening. A tree, which realised 900 feet of timber, has been donated to the club for the construction of the pavilion. That, however, will not be sufficient for requirements and furth'er such . donations wouxd be very gratefully received. The helping hand has also been extended by the Levin Bowiing Club, which has come for ward with an offer to provide eight scoring boards. This generous and sporting gesture was much appreciated. The green is a standard size one, suitabie for national tournaments, and provides for eight rinks. It is also very eentrally situated,. being close to town and having access from Salisbury and Clark Streets. It was made available j through the generosity of Mrs.' Waiter Lett, who donated the: necessary sections.
