Scouring Of Riverbank At Old Foxton Road

Severe scouring under river protection on the lower Manawatu at Ol'd Foxton Road resulted from the reeent heavy flood and repairs - will be carried out in the near future to avoid any deterioration fn the position. This was revealed to engineers of the Manawatu Catchment Board yesterday during an inspection by launch of the lower Manawatu between Shannon and Piako. The original protection work at Old Foxton Road was carried out by the Catchment Board last year. Investigations yesterday revealed that the water had scoured out the river bed from under the work, a length of some 15-20 chains being involved. The Catchment Board will treat the repair work as urgent and it is expected to begin within the next few weeks. The inspection yesterday also revealed that minor scouring had occurred on Bryant's spillway. This was lowered at the height of the flood to relieve the pressure on the banks in the Shannon area and resulted in a fall in river height of some six inches at Shannon Bridge. Scouring resulted at the spot , where the bank was lowered but only of a minor nature.
