Exchanges Of Agricultural Scientists Urged
WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. Graduate students from Canada, particularly those interested in sheep ahd dairy hUsbandry and in the production of grasses and Clover, could gain much from qourses and research at Massey College and the Dairy Research Institute, Palmerston North. This is the view of the retiring Acting High Commissioner for Canada, Dr. W. Clayton Hopper, who, in an interview today advocated the exchange of agricultural scientists between New Zealand and Canada in those fields of research. "I wish Canada had a scheme such as the Fulbright Plan of the United States to he7p finance the exchange of students and scientific workers," added. Dr. Hopper in expressing the hope that a similar scheme cpuld be established eventUally to accomplish the same objectiVes. Dr. Hopper, who is leaving for the United States by air on September 14, is himself an agricultural expert. He f sai'd he was particularly impressed with the use at the New Zealand research stations of identical twins in studying many aspects of dairying. He uncjerstood Sweden was the only other country employing identical twins in experimental work. There was evidence that in studying factors affecting butterfat production one pair of twins was equal to 50 pairs of animals selected at random, he said. The duties at the -High Commissionet's office after Dr. Hopper's fieparture will be assumed by the Diplomatic Secretary, Miss Agnes Ireland. She will be the first of her sex to hold that post in New Zealand.
