U.S. Football Coaches.
"The most important person at the university is the president, an-d the second most important is the football eoach. In fact, during the football season the coach is more photographed, quoted, interviewea, and widely known than the president," said Mr. J. M. Fraser, who has returned to New -Zealand after studying for a year at the University of California, in an address to the Christchurch Rotary Club. There were two types of coach, the successful and unsuccessful, he said, The former was a soft of demi-god, but the other led a miserable existence, and frequently pressure was applied by the students to have him removed from his post. "That is one of the unfavourable impressions I have-- formed about the [Jnited States," "he added. "They play to win, and they play hard to ivin." Medicine Man. Captain Cook knew how to keep bis crew healthy and free from scurvy when he came to New Zea.and. He gave them a drink made :rom dried vegetables, which, according t'o his journal, "didnT nake a bad small beer, speCially d the grounds of some reai beer were added." The jUiCe Was diluted in "12 pafts of water ahd an infusion made from rimu bark was added to make it even more palatable. This story was told on Sunday* by Mi\ Johannes C. Andersen, in a lecture at the Auck.and Museum— the first this year in ihe Sunday afternoon series.
