500 Killed When Ammunition Ship Explodes
Received Wednesday, 10.27 a.m. ; HONG KONG, August 23. | Over 500 people were killed thisj morning when the Chinese am-' munition ship Chungli exploded ati Takao Harbour in flouth Jeastern Formosa, says the official Chinese, news agency. i Ammunition was being unloadedi from the Chungli when the explo-j sion took place. It shook the wholei port and set fire to ten warehouses, and to two nearby ships which later sank. The blast broke nearly every window in Takao and caused ex- j tensive damage. Terror spread | throughout the citv which was j darkened by smoke. Most of the; dfead and an unestimated number of the injured were struck by Ry-; ing shrapnel as shells aboard the: Chungli exploded. The expiosionj occurred during the latter stagesl «f unloading 4000 tons of ammuni- 1 tion.
