Received Tuesday, /.o u p.m. SYDNEY, August 23. Applications by eight union leaders. for release from gaol where tliey are serving sentences for contempt of qhe, Arbitration Caurt, Were heard today. Also before the Arbitration Caurt were applications by the Miners ' Federation, Waterside Workers ' Federafion and Federated Tronworkers' Association, for a remission of fines totulling £5000, imposed on the unions. After hearing the apologies of tlie leaders and addresses by counsel, Chief :Tudge Kelly announeed this afternoon that the Court needed time to eonsider fully the various aspects of the applications and would give a decision tomorrow afternoon. During today's hearing the three unions paid over all their tlnes. The New South Wales couneil of the Australian Railways ITnion, has warned the Federal prcsident, Mr. J. Brown, that unless he refrains from meddling in branch affairs it will refuse to pay capitation fees amounting to £4000 yearly, to the Federal couneil, until he is removed from office. Mr. Brown, who is a Communist, visited New South Wales towns during the strike and tried unsuecessfully to induce railwaymen to defv their State executivfe and refuse to liandle coal.
