Shannon Declared Senior Rugby Champions

The Horowhenua Rugby Union has officialiy declared Shannon the senior competition winners for the 1949 season. In moving this at the management ' eommittee meeting last night, Mr. T. Winiata said he would like to Compliment Shannon on its victory. It had' been a great effort and a "grand wind up"' to the club's jubilee year. The Ath.'et-ic team's delegate, Mr. A. V." Morgan, said that on behalf of the runners-up he would also like to -extend congratulations. The better team had won. • • 7 The president, Mr. R. L. Robinson, said it had been a grand performance and it was gratifying to have ' clubs like Shannon in the competitions. The players and supporters would be very pleased, particularly as this was the climax to its jubilee. . On behalf of the Referees' Association, Mr. J. A. Zuppicich also extended congratulations. Shannon had always tried to put something into the game and played the type of football the union 'tried to aim at. The- Shannon . delegate,, Mr. L. Coulter, in thankihg members, said that it had been a good, hard game. Shannon had a good day and had probably struek Athletic on its bad day. Old Boys were Officialiy declared the winners • of the -third grade competition/ it being stated by the secretary, Mr. Fulla'rton, that out of 15 games played, Oid Boys had won 14 and drawn one. In moving that Old Boys be officialiy declared the winners, Mr. R. L. Robinson said that this team had played great football throughout the season. These players handed on from the College and schools were the coming senior grade players, and the future iooked bright. In seconding the motion, Mr. Zuppicich said that the young Old Boys' team had "material to burn." All credit was due to the coach, Mr. Juno, for the tremendous amount of enthusiasm he had put mto his work and the players had been r'esponsive., The team played the most delightfui footbahijn the most delightfpl : -football '4n the competitions. 'Next year the players would probably be split up but the clubs would benrfit.
