The New Zealand batsmen showed what they could do against mediocre bowling when they hit up 417 for three wickets and declared in their first innihgs against Durham at Sunderland. Scott, Smith and Mooney scored centuries and 400 came up in just over four hours. Rabono partnered Scott in giving the New Zealanders a good start with amopenmg stand of 138. ^ Smith and Mooney espeoiaily thrilled the crowd-when they fcame : together, adding ian unbeaten 21.8 runs in 122 minutes.
