New Plymouth Line May Reopen Saturday
WANGANUI, August 18. Plate-laying on the new 15-c'hain rail deviatoon on the Kai Iwi bank w'll probably be under wav before dawn tomorrow, and all being well Saturday 's Wellington-New Plymouth pa--prcss will use the line. The big force of bulldozers and mechanical shovels was still hard at work today elearing a secondary 600 ! yf rd slip at the northern end of thp ■ dfviation, but over the remainder of th( deviatoon 's length Jhe major excavatiou work is eompTete. Mr.' II. C. Tmstv, the Eailwavs De-: partinent's chief civil engineer, aaid, this morning it Was estimated that 10-0,000 vards of spoil had been shifted bv the machinery sinee August 5. Tn the 15 davs sinee the slip occurred.' the departnrent had complcted the job which Avould take a eood three months under normal- conditions. A largo seetion of the hillside above the new trnck is still on the move, but a 10ft. wide gap is being left on the inside f the new traek and the machinery will probablv continue to give this seetion atfention even when Ihe trains are nnining again. Fine weather today sx.ggested that tlie engineers may have no further interruptions from excessive rain. °
